Ode to the Biker Jacket

By : ,

We all have a favorite leather jacket, whether it be the traditional black, beige, or eggplant colors that we are so used to seeing.  That being said, we know that when we put one on, it gives our outfits that extra OOMPH!  It originated during the times of rebellion in the 40’s and 50’s; where putting on a leather jacket was your armor.  We’ve all seen the film, The Outsiders-our first crush on our beloved Ponyboy.  The ‘greasers’, and the ‘leather boys’ were common gang names among US and British rebels.

In 1960, when Yves Saint Laurent was working under Dior’s name, he designed the first couture leather jacket-entirely made from crocodile.  This was a scandalous move, because the public hadn’t seen a smooth transition from street wear to couture before.  This was a first and started a trend that lives on today.

It was popular in the 80’s and 90’s, with Cindy Crawford sporting a leather jacket in editorials.

Not only do celebrities flaunt their tough-girl style, but we can too.  Nasty Gal has leather jackets that are affordable and chic.  If you’re going to buy a staple item that’ll last you through decades, Saint Laurent is a go-to brand for sure.  Either way, whether pricey or not, you will be killing the game with your leather keepsake.  It is easy to throw on when in a rush or headed out for a night out with your girl gang.  Pair it with jeans, or over a dress and your look becomes effortlessly cool!
