2018 MET Gala Best Dressed

By : ,

The looks featured at this year’s Met Gala were heavenly, hence the telling nomenclature – Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. The outfits on the gold and red carpet were unbelievable, with some of the biggest industry names showing up to pay homage to spiritual beauty in the world’s most original styles, each one setting the bar even higher for Hollywood’s elite.

Instead of the night derailing or worse, being a bore, the designers, tailors, and hairdressers took risks that kept us gasping in awe. Blessed art those who took risks and committed themselves to the theme.

Cardi B

Is there anything about Cardi B that’s not shocking? Her persona met its match at this year’s Met Gala as she sported a couture Moschino gown resembling a Victorian queen – complete with intricate embellishments and a crown of gold and rubies. Truly the sovereign heir to the fashion throne, Ms. B conquers the best dressed category for her regal yet seductive rendition of history’s most beloved monarch.

  1. Kate Bosworth

Speaking of nobility, Kate Bosworth was a royal vision in her delicate Oscar de la Renta gown. Glowing in the limelight like a Renaissance bride, Lady Bosworth donned an elaborate veil with an embellished train that got audible gasps from the crowd. White and whimsical, she and her stylists mastered the art of convincing costuming by flawlessly transforming this Hollywood seductress into walking purity.

  1. Pope Riri

What could be more perfect for this year’s MET Gala theme than a silver and white crystal pope styled by John Galliano for Maison Margiela? Rhianna slayed the day with her impressive imperial getup, complete with a glittering Mitre headpiece that would make Pope Francis envy. Then again, did we really expect anything different from this fabulous fashion icon?

Youth and fortitude were dripping off of Lili Reinhart at this year’s MET Gala as she sauntered hand-in-hand with her new beau, Cole Sprouse in an haute couture armor-inspired gown by H&M. Her elegant and understated above-the-knee dress was simple yet immodest, provocative yet formal, and perfect yet unpretentious – just like her. Let’s not forget that train!

10.Lily Collins

Inspired by a famous religious work of art titled “Our Lady of Sorrows,” Lily Collins’ look was one of the most theatrical of the entire event. Wearing an ivory bordered asymmetrical black top and a shimmering rosary in her hands, Lily’s dramatic makeup and Givenchy getup was expertly aligned with this year’s motif (not to mention as intriguing as she is).

11.Blake Lively

In a superior Versace gown that reportedly took over 600 hours to make, Gossip Girl star and wife of Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, nailed it in her embroidered crimson ensemble with its jewel encrusted bodice. Paired with emerald earrings and a halo-esque hairpiece, the outfit’s lavish front paneling and gold lace detailing made it eerily reminiscent of the 16thcentury “Infant Jesus of Prague” statue in the opulent Discalced Carmelite Church of Our Lady Victorious.

  1. Sza

This year’s divine magic was not lost on Sza’s outfit, which was a whimsical baby-pink Versace creation with a plunging neckline and extravagant beadwork. Featuring numerous layers of tulle in the flowing floor-length skirt, Sza looked like the biblical Cinderella – complete with a tiara atop her tender tendrils and opulent golden jewelry that showcased her dewy, ethereal makeup.

13.Kim K

Even without her controversial husband, Kanye West, by her side, Kim Kardashian still turned heads in her “less is more” look by Versace. Featuring custom chainmail and embroidered crosses on the skin-tight bodice, Kim’s cleopatra-esque look came together seamlessly with a pair of strappy gold stilettos, a little smokey cat-eye makeup, and some 90’s-inspired lipliner.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Although these stars didn’t quite make it onto the Best Dressed list, their outfits were still amazing enough to be mentioned:

Ariana Grande– A rather sophisticated version of this trend-setter, Ariana showed up in a Vera Wang gown resembling the fine fresco ceiling at the Sistine Chapel.

Katy Perry– Looking like the female Archangel Gabriel, Perry donned huge immaculate wings and knee-high golden boots with her short, beaded Versace dress. She was even seen kneeling in prayer at the event.

Madonna – Like a (virgin) mother at a Catholic funeral, Madonna sported a midnight black gown by Jean Paul Gaultier with a lace face veil before reappearing in a hooded monk’s robe later.

Hailey Seinfeld – Tommy Hilfiger’s form-fitting, whimsical gown turned Hailey Seinfeld into a living, breathing porcelain doll.

Kate Upton – In an exquisite Roman-esque gown by Zac Posen, emerald goddess Kate Upton finished off the ensemble with a veil, intricate beaded headdress and minimalist makeup.

Stella Maxwell– Victoria Secret Angel, Stella Maxwell, stepped onto the Red Carpet wearing a long Moschino gown depicting various images of the divine Madonna.

To be honest this was by far our most favorite Met Gala carpet yet! Everyone (well mostly everyone) stuck to theme and stunned in custom couture to the Nth degree. If the first Monday of every month was Met Monday we would be totally okay with that.
